Controled Airspace

The Netherlands is a small country with pretty busy airspace. To keep it safe, we have a lot of Dutch drone regulations. Like in any other country, the regulations are most severe near national or military airports. In general, it is forbidden to fly a drone near these locations. As Kiwi Aerial Shots is one of the few fully certified drone companies in the Netherlands we can get special exemptions to make drone flights here.
On this blog, you read more about the drone regulations near Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Maastricht. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you are looking for a Dutch certified drone company that knows all about the Dutch drone regulations and can get the legal exemptions to film for example in Amsterdam. Drone shots in Amsterdam

As Amsterdam is really near our National Airport Schiphol, 99% of the city is in a so-called controlled traffic region, a CTR. This means it is not allowed to fly a drone in Amsterdam as this can interfere with airplanes trying to land or take-off which is strictly forbidden. The restricted airspace of Schiphol Airport has a radius of 14 km, almost 10, miles all around. Most of that radius is completely forbidden, also for us as a fully certified drone company. But as you can see in the image below, there is an orange zone in the last 3700meters of the CTR radius. Luckily, most of the city of Amsterdam is situated in this zone as we can get exemptions to fly here!

To get the drone exemptions to fly in Amsterdam, we do have to follow some steps:

Getting a drone exemption for Amsterdam
> The drone company has to be ROC certified
> The flight must be done by an RPA-L certified pilot
> The drone must be officially approved for CTR flights (SBV-L)
> There has to be a submitted flight plan that needs to get approved
> The drone company needs to work with an official  RT, radio transmitter operator that is in constant contact with the Schiphol Airport Air traffic control

At Kiwi Aerial Shots we can arrange all this and we can get the legal exemptions to make drone shots in Amsterdam. Check the map below to see if the location you have in mind is within the orange zone. If it is, let us know and we can arrange your drone video production in Amsterdam. If it’s not, we can offer helicopter flights. Our camera operators can make aerial shots of Amsterdam using the Cineflex system. Check our Helicopter page for more information.

You can find more information about the restricted Airspace above Amsterdam at the website of Port of Amsterdam/drones.

Flying a drone in Rotterdam

As the city of Rotterdam is also right next to its civil airport, it’s not allowed to make any drone flights within the nearest airspace. The CTR zone of Rotterdam is almost just as big as Amsterdam but the 100% restricted zone is thankfully much smaller! herefore we can get airspace exemptions for almost any drone flight in Rotterdam. These drone flights are only allowed for Dutch drone companies that are completely certified. Kiwi Aerial Shots is such a company and we have shot many drone productions in Rotterdam minding the following Dutch drone regulations:

Getting a drone exemption for Rotterdam
> The drone company has to be ROC certified
> The flight must be done by an RPA-L certified pilot
> The drone must be officially approved for CTR flights (SBV-L)
> There has to be a submitted flight plan that needs to get approved
> The drone company needs to work with an official  RT, radio transmitter operator that is in constant contact with the tower of Rotterdam Airport.

Let us know when you are looking for a Dutch drone team that can make drone shots in City center of Rotterdam. You can reach us through our contact page.

Making drone footage in Rotterdam

As the completely regulated CTR zone of Rotterdam airspace is much smaller than in Amsterdam, we have more locations and options to make drone flights in Rotterdam. As you can see on the map below, we are allowed to make drone flights in the outer circle. This means we can make drone shots of the landmarks in Rotterdam like the Erasmus bridge, DE Rotterdam and the harbors of Rotterdam. As you can see, we can also get exemptions to make drone footage in Delft, Zoetermeer, Spijkernisse, and Rijswijk.

If you are really looking for aerial shots within the inner circle of the image below, don’t hesitate to contact us. We can maybe offer our helicopter filming services or can double-check the latest drone exemptions of 2023.

Drone shots in Rotterdam harbor

As you can see in the image above the Rotterdam Harbor is outside the restricted drone airspace. Nevertheless, it’s not allowed to fly a drone in a harbor area. This can only be done by certified drone companies like us at Kiwi Aerial Shots. We know the workflow to get official permission to fly our drones in the Rotterdam harbor. Contact us through our contact page so we can hear what you want to make drone footage of in the Rotterdam Harbor. We can tell you everything about our drone services and airspace exemptions. on another blog of Kiwi Aerial Shots you can find even more information about Dutch airspace and Dutch drone regulations in 2023.

Not as popular as drone cinematography in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, but also the Dutch city Maastricht has it’s own Airport and has a pretty big restricted Airspace for drone flights. On the map below you can see the whole CTR zone of Maastricht. The orange part is where most other Dutch drone companies are not allowed to make a drone video. Same as the drone regulations in Amsterdam, you need to be a fully certified drone company to get the needed airspace exemptions.

> The company has to be ROC certified
> One needs an RPA-L certified pilot
> The drone must be approved for CTR flights (SBV-L)
