Drone company workflow, certification and safety

When we receive a drone assignment, we first discuss the client’s exact requirements and the location of the drone operations. Based on this information, we prepare a detailed flight plan in which safety and privacy are key priorities. Immediately prior to filming on location, the flight plan is reviewed with the drone team and the client, after which the drone operations are carried out safely and fully insured.

We almost always operate with drone teams consisting of at least two people: a certified drone pilot and a camera operator, or, in the case of FPV drone productions, a legally required visual observer (spotter), as the FPV pilot operates using FPV goggles and has limited direct visual awareness of the surrounding environment.

Full-Service Drone Operations

Kiwi Aerial Shots provides complete end-to-end drone production services. Where required, we arrange all necessary airspace permissions, and all of our drones and equipment are fully certified and insured. We operate exclusively with the latest drones and professional camera systems, and all of our drone pilots are fully licensed and certified.

We actively collaborate with clients to achieve the best possible results and can operate as part of a large-scale film production, or as a stand-alone drone team independently executing the drone operations on location.

The drones we fly

  • FPV stands for First Person View and refers to the fact that the FPV drone pilot flies using FPV goggles, operating the drone from the drone’s perspective. Small FPV drones allow us to fly at very high speeds and through extremely tight spaces. These drones are typically equipped with GoPro cameras and are frequently used for sports events, high-speed automotive commercials, and indoor drone operations where we fly through offices or commercial buildings. These indoor drone tours are especially popular for corporate films showcasing factory halls, warehouses, or large office environments.
  • Larger FPV cinelifter drones combine very high flight speeds with the ability to carry professional cinema cameras such as the RED Komodo-X, Blackmagic cameras, or the Freefly Ember high-speed camera. These cameras are either hard-mounted directly to the drone or mounted on a DJI RS4 gimbal for stabilized cinematic footage.
  • The DJI Inspire 3 is an extremely versatile drone that can be deployed quickly. Its X9 camera features a full-frame sensor capable of capturing professional-quality images in up to 8K resolution. The ability to use a wide range of lenses makes the Inspire 3 our most frequently deployed drone platform.
  • Heavy-lift drones are larger platforms with a maximum takeoff weight of up to 25 kg and are primarily used for aerial cinematography with large cinema camera setups. These drone shots are typically produced for feature films and high-end TV commercial productions.
  • At Kiwi Aerial Shots, we also design and build custom drones for unique project requirements. These may include innovative cinematic productions, experimental filming techniques, or conceptual and artistic projects requiring specialized drone solutions.
  • We operate drones equipped with high-output LED lighting systems to create dynamic moving light and shadow effects. This includes powerful 2000W LED lighting units mounted on heavy-lift drones using gimbals, as well as compact LED lighting systems flown on FPV drones for more agile lighting applications.

Other services Kiwi Aerial Shots

  • Helicopter Aerial Filming: In addition to our core expertise in drone cinematography, our teams also provide helicopter aerial filming. We operate both in the Netherlands and worldwide using Cineflex or Shotover systems. Helicopters allow aerial shots that are impossible with drones, enabling higher, longer, and faster flights. We have extensive experience filming offshore, including cruise ships, container vessels, and for programs on the Discovery Channel. We handle helicopter productions from start to finish, including planning, helicopter pilots, camera operators, and direction. Often, we also include a photographer on board to capture the maximum value from each flight.

  • Drone Lighting Systems: We operate both large and small drones equipped with our custom-built drone lighting systems. From a small 600W LED on an FPV drone to large 2500W LED lamps under a heavy-lift drone, all lights are built in-house and controllable remotely. We can turn lights on/off, dim them, control color, and often mount them on a gimbal. Our largest systems are water-cooled for maximum output, providing cinematic lighting effects from the air.

  • Custom Drones and Camera Setups: At Kiwi Aerial Shots, we maintain a large workshop where we design, build, and test custom drones, camera setups, and components. We use a 3D printer and CNC milling machine to create drones for conceptual productions, including package-carrying drones capable of transporting a Peli case. Beyond large custom drones, we also build small FPV drones and multi-array camera setups for high-resolution filming with ultra-wide angles.

  • 360° VR and 180° Spatial Immersive Drone Filming: We produce 360-degree aerial footage for VR content, compatible with headsets such as META Quest, Pico, and Apple Vision Pro. Our custom setups enable us to fly high-resolution 360° cameras. Additionally, we now create 180-degree spatial immersive footage using the latest Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive camera, designed for Apple Vision Pro content. Immersive drone filming is a unique specialty of Kiwi Aerial Shots.

  • Drone Filming for Extreme Sports and Remote Locations: We specialize in filming in hard-to-reach and extreme locations. Our drones have flown atop Mont Blanc, inside Icelandic volcanoes, across the Moroccan desert, and over the Amazon rainforest. Our extensive outdoor experience and personal involvement in extreme mountain sports allow us to capture the most stunning aerial footage for outdoor expeditions, adventure films, and nature documentaries.

Collaborations and rates of our drone services

You can always contact us for any questions regarding professional aerial cinematography. We have fixed rates for our various drone services and operate in the Netherlands based on half-day and full-day shoots. A half-day shoot equals 5 hours, a full-day shoot equals 10 hours, including travel time from Amsterdam. All rates are excluding VAT and travel costs for the team members involved.

For art projects or passion-driven productions, we offer a reduced rate, as we enjoy collaborating on creative productions and unique film concepts that may not have the budgets of larger film productions. For international shoots, we typically offer a project-based price, which can vary depending on multiple factors. Please contact us so we can provide detailed information and a tailored quote.
